Meet Dr. Brizendine

Being an orthodontist has been three-fourths of my time. It’s been rewarding and has given me a chance to interact with and know a large portion of the community. Having opened my practice in 1990, I have had the pleasure of serving generations of families and, to this day, run into former patients who greet me with wonderful smiles!

Serving both the northern San Joaquin Valley and Amador County allows me to get to know a diverse range of people. I appreciate all that my patients have taught me over the years. The stories and insights they have shared, about their daily lives, interests, and activities, have all broadened my world and made me a better person and professional.

In turn, I have constantly strived to provide every patient with the best orthodontic experience – one that is comfortable and efficient – with excellent results. I want each person to finish their treatment with improved oral health, a good bite, and a smile that grows their self-esteem and the confidence with which they greet the world!

Education and Experience

I grew up in Berrien Springs, Michigan, and found my way to orthodontics after doing manual labor and not enjoying it very much. Realizing I wanted a career where I helped people and had opportunities to build relationships, along with wanting to be challenged to grow, made orthodontics a natural fit. I have been practicing for 36 years and have enjoyed every day of my career. There are not many people who are this lucky!

Prior to practicing, I completed my Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS), Master of Science (MS), and Orthodontic Residency at Loma Linda University.

In the years since I welcomed my first patient, much about orthodontics has changed. We now have digital technologies that have transformed diagnostics and treatment; we better understand the development of the mouth and have effective early-intervention techniques that mean less invasive treatment later; and we have a range of “aesthetic” treatment options that are effective and virtually invisible for our adolescent and adult patients!

What hasn’t changed is my happiness when I see the excitement on my patient’s face the day they get their braces off! Those smiles, the pride and amazement, are energizing and truly inspire me!

Continuing Education and Professional Affiliations

While continuing education (CE) is required to maintain my professional license, I enjoy learning: CE allows me to study the latest advancements and incorporate the best into the practice.

I am an active member of the:

  • American Association of Orthodontists
  • Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists
  • California Association of Orthodontists
  • American Dental Association

These organizations offer numerous avenues for me to learn from leading practitioners, researchers, and my peers. In addition to attending meetings, lectures, and hands-on training, I stay current with the latest refereed journals and other publications.

Throughout my career I have sought out new orthodontic options that improve the patient experience – more efficient, comfortable, accurate – and ensure predictable, stable results. My patients deserve the best of modern orthodontics and to finish treatment with a radiant, healthy smile they love!

Beyond the Practice

When I go home in the evening it’s to spend time with Kelly, my wife of 40 years, at our home in Lodi. Kelly and I have two daughters, Erica and Jillian, who are both married; we now have five grandchildren!

I spend a lot of my free time with my grandchildren, though I also enjoy trips to the coast and to Hawaii, and am an avid golfer, as well. Time is set aside for cheering for the San Francisco Giants, of course. When I have the time, I like reading a good book, and Kelly tells me I should enjoy yard work, too!
